Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect... ... Hurricane Watch remains in effect... ... New information... The center of Tropical Storm Hanna is now about 375 miles south of Wilmington. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch remain in effect for coastal eastern North Carolina. A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected within the warning area within the next 24 hours. A Hurricane Watch warning means that hurricane conditions are also possible. ... Areas affected... This statement recommends actions to be taken by persons in... eastern North Carolina. ... Storm information... At 1100 am EDT... the center of Tropical Storm Hanna was located near latitude 28.9 north... longitude 79.2 west or about 375 miles... south of Wilmington North Carolina. Hanna is moving toward the northwest near 20 mph. A gradual turn to the north with an increase in forward speed is expected later this afternoon. On the forecast track... the center of Hanna will be near the southeast coast of the United States tonight. However... rains and winds associated with Hanna will reach the coast well in advance of the center. Maximum sustained winds remain near 65 mph... with higher gusts. Only slight strengthening is forecast prior to landfall... although it is still possible for Hanna to become a hurricane. The minimum central pressure just reported by the aircraft was 980 mb... 28.94 inches. ... Watches/warnings... No additional hazards are in effect. ... Precautionary/preparedness actions... All precautionary and preparedness actions should be rushed to completion this morning before conditions deteriorate later today. ... Storm surge and storm tide... A 2 to 4 foot storm surge is possible tonight continuing into Saturday along the coast south of Cape Lookout. North of Cape Lookout the surge is expected to average 1 to 3 feet. Storm surges of 2 to 4 feet will also be possible along the banks of the Neuse and Pamlico rivers. The surf is expected to become very rough this afternoon through Saturday with a high threat of dangerous rip currents. ... Winds... Tropical storm force winds are expected to spread north through the area this afternoon and continue into Saturday morning.
